The Windlight technology, that came as part of Linden Lab's purchase of lighting effects company Windward Mark back in May, and that was subsequently rolled out in the First Look viewer for Second Life, has been shelved. The early test was hardly a roaring success, and for now, Linden have simply decided to work on it some more. For those that just can't live without that gawdawful turquoise blob sun however, you can find the code under public version control courtesty of Zen Linden, who we assume is one of the Windward Mark guys with Linden sponsored false mustache and glasses.
Shame - personally I loved the Windlight Viewer. Not just the extra rendering (didn't meddle too much) but for the fact that I got a couple of weeks in SL with barely a crash or glitch. On the Mac at least, it seemed like the most stable viewer yet. Of course it goes bananas now the grid has been updated. What do we get instead - a voice version with a fiddly communications menu that seems to slow everything down to a slower crawl than usual. So it's back to the regular viewer - but hang on, where is the friends list, my accounts balance and working IM? From two weeks with a serious improvement it is back to the usual incompetent mess.
