Second Rant #8 - Philanthropic Academics and the Stereotypical Poor

Tagged:

Join Nick Wilson and Prokofy Neva on the Second Rant Podcast. This week we look at the recent mixed reality event in the City of Mexico and discuss philanthropy and wealth in Second Life. As an experiment, we've allowed this weeks podcast to go on for longer, and to ramble a bit -- some of our best conversations have been off-air, after the show, and we wanted to see what you thought of a looser style. So do let us know!

Great podcast !

I totally agree - My "first" career was as a architectural sustainabilty consultant ( read : "boring person working on climate change" - thanks for that Prokofy haha ), with one of the global leaders in the field. It's part of the reason why I'm so excited about virtual worlds.

Virtual worlds and virtual communities may well be the KEY to sorting out many of our problems - especially socioligical integration between cultures, sustainable living, and addressing poverty. Seeing projects such as SL as a "luxury" is just a demonstration the authors total lack of vision - they are an essential tool.

Virtual worlds are precisely the type of massively enabling technolgies we need to collaborate and work fast enough to deal with those problems. Sound like this guy needs to read some Doug Englebart !!!

One thing that really came across in the way you were talking so positively about SL there Prokofy, which is really how I feel about it, is the amazing potential of this technology. Some of these old media and academics, dourly attempting to maintain their position of "understanding" society and just transposing their pre-virtual world view is just silly, as you say Nick - its moving too fast for all that, maybe we will understand it in 5 years time.. Saying that I think Phillip Rosedale was right in that recent interview - SL just does have a "positive vibe"... lets just go with it !

In terms of expense, I also think the "mega build" is over. The builds I'm involved with, whilst being for large organisations and countries - are not being delivered on huge budgets by highly publicised virtual media companies and "star" builders etc. Watch out the Sheep and Millions of Us!

Great podcast format by the way, really like the more informal, and seemingly more jovial mood !

I used to think Prokofy was just an opinionated, contrarian, I've changed my mind, good positive stuff. Ok so every second avatar you meet is either an antropoligist, a blogger or both but if I was pressed to come up with a catch all for us residents it would be Enthusiastic Amateurs. Thankfully there are no experts here, we are crawling around in the dark guys, its all new. But hey last night I had a dream and all these avatars were running around proclaiming that Joi Koi is the king, he has the knowledge, the wisdom, go ask Joi Koi he knows what comes next, where we are all going....... Then I woke up...... thank ****, it was just a dream!
I do know its about Us, We are it. I also know its a 3d populated environment, use it, if ur thinking of hosting a lecture, don't bother I can listen to that on the radio or watch it on the telly. If you want a 2 way conversation, 1 to 1 or many to many, I'm there. Let me interact......thats what we are here to do :-)

One-way broadcasting a feed into SL without opportunity for conversation or backchat should eventually die out as residents get frustrated with people trying to use SL to appear hip and cool and with-it when they're clearly not.

EXAMPLE: The one-way broadcast of Barak Obama into SoHo a few months back was a fair attempt, but was really nothing more than using only the streaming capabilities of SL. Everything else, including the Obama puppet, was just smoke and mirrors.

Metaversed is doing an excellent job of making sure that events that they do with SL (or other world components) use the capabilities of the platform to foster communication, not firewall it off.

As always, look to the musicians as the innovators. Especially Cylindrian, who doesn't just broadcast live gigs in coffeehouses into Atropolis/elsewhere in SL, but makes sure there's at least some interactive aspect to those special engagements.

Haha ! Yeh Crap.. damn right .. muso's lead the way ;)
