Reloading September's First Friday Tech Expo

Last Friday we packed the Metaversed Second Life sim full and were treated to some of the hottest inventions we've seen in ages. The entire event was recorded to video by SLCN.tv. For those of you interested in a quick roundup of the devices I've written an overview below, but meanwhile here are the video links:

All files can be found at metaversed.blip.tv.

Ksso Yamauba - SL Messenger
This free watch looks nice and was a great way to open things up. After wearing the watch and registering at the SL Messenger website, a series of functions are activated. You can be paged, your online status is made available on the web, some messaging functions are enabled and lists of places you've been and people you've spoken with are automatically kept. This is all secured by password on the website. SL Messenger is officially in Beta right now and they're definitely open to suggestions, and you can visit them in-world to pick yours up today!

Temporal Mitra - TIM (the clickable tv)
The TIM screen had just been hacked together recently but has a lot of potential. Installation is extremely simple as it automatically fills in the parcel's media settings on rez. Users click on it once, are presented with a menu of channel choices, and then click it again to play. The unique feature here is that everybody can be watching something completely different while sitting in the same room together. It was a fast interface too.

Navillus Batra - vHUD
This is a video player that works in your heads-up display and streams video from any sim that is Silverstream enabled, as well as having a Flickr search function. We had a great moment at one point where we could watch the live broadcast of the event through the HUD and in person at the same time, creating a bizarre echo. Click here for an 800x600 screenshot of the HUD in action (opens in a new window).

Jim Allen - BidSL
This is the innovative eBay style system that Nick wrote about earlier last week. People can easily place objects up for bid, and bidding on objects is as easy as paying the prim. This is active technology you can use right now at the BidSL Auction House. You can give them feedback at the official website as well.

Tue Turok - SL Tronics Media
Similar to the TIM system, this automatically fills in the parcel's media settings on rez and provides multiple streams, but has the added advantage of having a menu that appears right on the screen itself. It's for sale right now at the SL Exchange.

Great screen shot of the vHUD in action, and I love the new video recording!
I just wanted to let people know that they could pick up a free copy of the vHUD on our sim i3D, slurl ... http://tinyurl.com/ypoag2, or see video demos of the vHUD on our site ... http://www.i3dnow.com/blog/?p=18

Thanks, and what a great event!

I have been watching the SCLN.TV segments, and find them really helpful to pickup on technology particulars I did not catch at the time.

I have posted a number of event photos at http://flickr.com/photos/seesaw8/sets/72157601934158041/

Keep the leading edge technology coming.
