Join Nick Wilson and Prokofy Neva for the Second Rant podcast. On this weeks show we take a look at the convoluted system of bug tracking, power and corruption in Second Life and ask the questions: Why can't we just say no? Is there any such thing as "user error"?
I wonder if one thing to ask for is general support for vector graphics in SL. I mean, some ideas for html on a prim basically turn the web page into an image, a bitmap image, which sucks for presentations because the text can be scaled down so small that the resolution makes it look like a blob. If we had vector graphic support, they hey, you have support for lots of great stuff, like real text that isn't hovertext and doesn't eat up prims for each letter. Then you can bring in text formatting in a resolution independant way, pdf document embedding, html, flash, all kinds of stuff. Imagine being able to import a vector graphic of a star or cog wheel and then have that be the prim template, extrude it a bit and you have a really cool 3D shape.

HTML on a prim is designed to mimic a x-resolution browser window.
If you want vector graphics, upload your vectors as prims.
It wouldn't be a bad thing to have 2d vectors in the game, we just don't for right now. Maybe if you have that expertise, you should apply to Linden Labs. (This isn't sarcasm, it's honesty.)
I completely agree with Prokofy that Linden Lab are really not using the resource available to them in the community. I find it strange, that a company who created such a visionary tool, are unable to see the benefits in utilising all types of thinking. They are currently using left brain thinkers only. Why not utilise the contributions of the brilliant right brain thinkers within their community ? Or perhaps they arn't that visionary...
Of course - the power IS in too few hands, but then I'd suspect the difficult of this mechanism, this procedure for becoming "powerful" within Second Life, is something LL are entirely aware of and are perpetuating. Things that happen inside SecondLife may well be "our imagination", but it think its clear the platform is most certainly "their world".
My understanding of the potential for html on a prim isn't necessarily limited to the simple replication of a 2d web inside Second Life. It would fundamentally alter the flow of data through Second Life, opening the way for anything, hosted anywhere on the internet to be streamed through SL. This paves the way a far richer experiential environment which doesnt all rely on Linden based hosting. This wouldn't necessarily just be "fancy stuff" - it could mean a far easier user experience - for instance orientations / welcome areas / in world explanations that talk to the user with voiceovers etc.. instead of millions of notecards..
No more second rants? It's been a few weeks and I need my nick and prokofy fix!
It's coming Maxx, couple of hours :)
